Fernando Anuang’a is an international artist and choreographer based in Kenya. His career spanning more than three decades has made him known not only in Kenya, but around the world. Anuang’a’s unique way of expressing art through dance is a testament to his passion and dedication to dance and his roots. The traditions of Kenya’s Maasai tribes meet contemporary dance in an impressive way. His performance inspires time and time again.

Before Anuang’a Fernando’s performance, there will be a performance by the 2024 Emma Award nominee (ethno-record category of the year) Faso Ka. The band performs melodic music stemming from West Africa’s rich musical tradition

Early Years and Influences
Anuang’a’s artistic journey began in 1990 as a member of the renowned Rarewatts dancers. During this time, he had the opportunity to collaborate with African Heritage, both in Kenya and abroad. As an autodidact, Anuang’a drew inspiration from the Maasai traditional dance and their captivating voices. This influence laid the foundation for his distinct dance language and his approach to contemporary dance. Seeking further growth and artistic exploration, he attended masterclasses conducted by renowned choreographer Carolyn Carlson, which proved to be a transformative experience.

International Exposure and Career Milestones
Fuelled by his passion and boundless creativity, Anuang’a embarked on a journey that took him across continents. His talent and dedication paved the way for him to showcase his solo pieces at prestigious venues such as the National Dance Center of Angelin PRELJOCAJ – Pavillon Noir in France and the Centre Chorégraphique National of Carolyn CARLSON, Colisée in Roubaix.
One of his notable creations, “Traditional Future,” was brought to life at studio AKILI of Wayne MacGregor in LAMU. This captivating show, produced by fashion designer Pierre CARDIN, earned him recognition and was staged at the Musée du Quai Branly in Paris and the Grand Theatre – Espace Cardin in 2011. Through “Traditional Future,” Anuang’a aimed to express the evolution of gestures and a more liberal energy, bridging the gap between tradition and contemporary dance.

Residences and Presentations
Anuang’a has been invited to various dance creation residences and has showcased his talent in numerous presentations. One of his notable works, “A Journey into the Future,” was performed at the Pavillon Noir in Aix en Provence. The piece was also presented at the Centre National of Dance – Carolyn Carlson in Roubaix and the Festival June Events – Atelier de Paris.
His latest dance creation, “Traditional Future,” was presented at the Musée du Quai Branly – Theatre Lévi Strauss in Paris. This mesmerizing performance showcased his dedication to preserving and evolving traditional dance forms.
His talent has taken him to international stages, where he has captivated audiences with his unique performances. He presented “Voices & Feelings” at the Festival Oriente Occidente in Italy, showcasing his ability to evoke emotions through his art. Additionally, “Traditional Future” was performed at Solomeo, Theatre Cucinelli in Italy, and the Festival Ravenna.

Collaborations and Guest Appearances
Anuang’a’s talent has led him to collaborate with esteemed performing artists like Kamel Ouali, Georges Momboye,  Jean Francoise Zygel, Marcus Miller and Rokia Traore further expanding his artistic horizons and contributing to the rich cultural tapestry of African dance.
