Classical and Contemporary – Consert of Kimitoön Music Festival
Kuula’s Soitto is not born of sorrow but of determination. Madetoja creates a melancholic atmosphere, whilst Austere (serious, austere), commissioned by Jaakko Kilpeläinen, reveals a young composer’s approach to writing for a septet. In Haydn’s ‘Bird Quartet’, one might imagine hearing birdsong in the 18th-century style. Arensky’s quartet begins like a devout Orthodox hymn. The work was dedicated to the memory of Tchaikovsky.
